Du plus lointain de ses souvenirs, l’artiste peintre émailleure
Lorraine Bouchard a toujours eu la passion des arts et du dessin.
Dès l’âge de dix ans, un apprentissage artistique plus formel
s’amorce alors qu’elle suit des cours avec rigueur chez les sœurs de
Sainte-Anne. Se succèdent trois ans de fusain, cinq ans de peinture
à l’huile, une formation en pyrogravure et en émail sur cuivre
qu’elle enseignera plus tard en psychiatrie. En 1970, l’artiste
s’inscrit à des cours du soir au Musée des Beaux Arts dans
l’objectif de parfaire sa maîtrise du modèle vivant. Au-delà d’une
carrière professionnelle qui l’occupe à plein temps, sa recherche
artistique se poursuit au fil des ans. Elle s’intéresse à différents
médiums, notamment à la céramique, à la peinture sur bois et devient
même chapelière.
L’artiste reprend des cours d’émail sur cuivre en 2001. C’est le
coup de foudre. En 2006, elle quitte son travail pour y consacrer
tout son temps. En 2007, un stage avec la grande émailleure
canadienne Fay Rooke lui fait découvrir une nouvelle technique de
travail. À la même époque, l’artiste fait l’acquisition d’un nouveau
four qui lui permet de s’investir dans diverses œuvres grand format,
aux dimensions pouvant désormais atteindre jusqu’à 70 x 90 cm (30 x
36 po.) |

Sur ses plaques de cuivre, Lorraine Bouchard opère sa magie en
alternant les couches de poudre d’émail et les cuissons pour en
faire de fascinants paysages à l’image de ceux de son quotidien. La
technique d’émail sur cuivre exige un grand doigté enrichi d’une
connaissance approfondie des réactions de la poudre d’émail sous
l’effet de la chaleur. Les résultats remarquables qu’obtient cette
artiste, qui décrit avec tant de justesse l’émail sur cuivre comme
un art où feu et passion se conjuguent, témoignent solidement de sa
patience, de son étonnante dextérité ainsi que de son talent
exceptionnel de dessinatrice et de coloriste.
As
long as she can remember, enamel painter Lorraine Bouchard has
always had a passion for art and drawing. Beginning at age 10, she
sought more formal training through art classes given under the
rigorous supervision of the Sisters of Saint Anne. She undertook
three years of training in charcoal drawing, five years in oil
painting, an apprenticeship in poker work, and flat copper enameling
which she subsequently taught within the field of psychiatry. She
pursued a night course in 1970 at the Museum of Fine Arts to perfect
her art with living models. Through the years, Ms. Bouchard never
ceased her artistic exploration outside a busy full-time
professional career. Her interests eventually expanded to various
media such as ceramics, tole painting and even hat design.
A
new series of courses exploring enameling arts that she undertook in
2001 opened up a whole new world for this artist. In 2006, she
finally quit her job to devote herself more fully to her art. A
workshop in 2007 with famous Canadian enamelist Fay Rooke prompted
the artist’s discovery of a new work technique. Around the same
time, she purchased a new kiln which, since then, enables her to
produce larger pieces with dimensions now reaching up to 30” x 36’’.
From plain copper sheets, Lorraine Bouchard’s magic unfolds.
Alternating between enamel coatings and firings, she brilliantly
excels in the rendering of captivating scenery inspired from her
cherished daily surroundings. Working with enamel requires flawless
precision combined with a deep sense of how different enamel powders
vitrify under heat. The remarkable results the artist obtains (very
appropriately described by her as the meeting of fire and passion)
are solid testimonies of her infinite patience, stunning dexterity
and exceptional talent as a drawing artist and colorist. |
